Kumar got his degree from Madras Christian College in the city of Chennai. In April 1997, he started helping Priyadarshan with the Malayalam movie Chandralekha as his assistant. He also worked on the movies Hera Pheri and Doli Saja Ke Rakhna with Priyadarshan.

Ishtam, which came out in 2001, was his first Telugu movie. Then he watched Yavarum Nalam, a Tamil movie.
